Volunteen

volunteenAre you interested in a future career in health care?  Or just looking to do something really fun this summer?  Then volunteering at Saint Joseph’s Hospital may be just what you are looking for!  Volunteen opportunities are available to teens ages 14 to 18 each summer during the months of June and July.  Applications are available beginning in January.  Deadline to apply is March 1.  No applications will be accepted after this date.  We do reserve the right to stop accepting applications sooner if we exceed our numbers so don’t delay in sending your information in! Applications also include: parental consent forms, teacher/counselor/employer recommendation, and a copy of your immunization record.

All prospective new teens who have a completed application in the volunteer office by the deadline will be contacted for an interview with the volunteer services coordinator to take place in March or April.  All teens accepted into the program must complete the necessary TB (tuberculosis) testing requirements.  Attendance at orientation is mandatory and takes place the first week of June.  All teens must purchase a uniform which is available at orientation.

Teens generally come once or twice per week to work a 4-hour shift.  Volunteens are needed Monday- Friday from 8am- 4pm.  Volunteens work in a variety of areas including: Admissions, Breast Health, Central Transportation, CICU, Cath Lab, Mail and Flower Delivery, Medical Library, providing information at the front desk and delivering tea to cancer patients.

Teens are required to attend one of the four Lunch-n-Learns provided throughout the summer.  This is a time for teens to learn more about a particular career in health care or a new procedure that the hospital is participating in.  Previous topics have included: pharmacy, physical therapy, emergency department, hospitalist, nutrition, eICU, Gamma Knife, and robotics. At the end of the summer, all teens who have attended a Lunch-n-Learn and filled out an evaluation will be mailed a certificate.
