A Joint Venture

Dr. Dopson
Understanding total joint replacement
There is no greater stress than the unknown. Stress is often magnified when we undergo a medical procedure, especially one involving total joint replacement. We can spend considerable energy and time wondering how the procedure will affect our life, work and our family members. Relieving unnecessary tension and promoting education for patients and their family members are the cornerstones of Saint Joseph’s Hospital's A Joint Venture program. A Joint Venture was designed by the orthopaedic department to address questions of patients undergoing total joint replacement. The program combines the expertise of the orthopaedic nursing, patient education, surgery, rehabilitation and social services department in a two-hour, complimentary presentation for patients and their family members.

Why is A Joint Venture important?
Successful results are important in any medical procedure. Research studies indicate patients usually have far greater success and a faster recovery once they reach a comfort level of knowledge regarding their medical procedure.

A Joint Venture was developed to give you and your family members a total understanding of your surgery and recovery. You’ll learn that your surgery and recovery are part of a comprehensive team effort. Most importantly, you’ll understand that you are key to your success. The class is highly recommended before surgery or for individuals contemplating surgery.

What to expect from the class
A Joint Venture is a complimentary program for patients and family members. The class guides you and your family through the total joint replacement procedure and carefully prepares you for each step of the process — pre-surgery, hospitalization, recovery, hospital discharge and home recovery. During the class, patients and Saint Joseph’s staff discuss the hospital stay, surgical events, post-operative conditions, progress timetables and precautions to be taken during the rehabilitation period. Patients may also schedule a tour of the orthopaedic unit and meet nursing staff. In addition, you will receive a helpful informational packet.

The class is a perfect addition to your physician’s consultation concerning your surgery and recovery. Discussed in detail are the following:
  • What’s wrong with my joint? Understand why you may need joint replacement surgery. Learn about the procession of joint disease.
  • Exercises before surgery: Learn beneficial exercise movements to prepare for surgery and recovery.
  • Planning for surgery: Learn about types of anesthesia, advance directives, blood transfusions and medical clearance.
  • The day of surgery: Understand what will happen and when. Learn what total joint surgery is about and see the joint hardware.
  • What to expect after surgery: Learn about pain control, exercises and rehabilitation.
  • Getting stronger with physical therapy: Learn a progressive exercise regimen to assist in recovery.
  • Plans after discharge: Understand discharge planning options.

"I definitely feel better prepared for my surgery after attending this class."
