Head and Neck Cancers
Head and neck cancers are defined
as those cancers of the tongue, lips & mouth, throat
and voicebox (larynx.)
Treatment usually includes a combination of Chemotherapy,
Radiation Therapy, & Surgery, and can result
in swallowing and speech deficits, necessitating
rehabilitation. Since it's inception, The
Evelyn Trammell Voice and Swallowing Center has
provided expert assessments and cures of these
associated deficits.
The Evelyn Trammell Voice and Swallowing
Center also founded the first head and neck cancer
support group in the state of Georgia for survivors
of head and neck cancers. Now as a recognized
chapter of Support for People with Oral, Head
and Neck Cancer (SPOHNC), the group has provided
education and support
to cancer survivors and their loved ones since
1997. In 2000, the Voice and Swallowing
Center and the Saint Joseph’s Center for
Cancer Care and Research, established the
first program in Georgia to offer free public
screenings for head and neck cancer. Screenings
are conducted annually during national Oral, Head
& Neck Cancer Awareness Week in April.
