Sharing the Journey Cancer Survivorship Conference

Sharing the JourneyMark your calendar and plan to join us for the Eighth Annual Sharing the Journey Cancer Survivorship Conference on Saturday, March 29, 2008, from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm in the Saint Joseph’s Carroll Conference & Education Center. Download and print the conference brochure. This full-day community education program is free to the public and features a variety of speakers on cancer-related topics. The day begins with Greg Anderson who will share the uplifting story of a man diagnosed 23 years ago with stage IV lung cancer and how his life has been shaped, defined and enriched by his cancer journey. We hope Greg’s story will bring warmth and insight, inspiration and hope to those facing their own cancer journey.

Breakout sessions throughout the day will explore the side effects of cancer from both a physical and emotional viewpoint. We are proud to bring together physicians and other experts in the field of oncology, as well as psychologists, social workers and others from the community to offer sessions on a wide variety of topics including complementary and integrative therapies, nutrition, relaxation, and managing long term side effects. This year’s conference will feature interactive afternoon breakout sessions which include a healthy food cooking demonstration, workshop on getting organized, and sessions exploring male and female intimacy issues after cancer. Our goal for the conference is to expand your knowledge and provide an opportunity for you to share your experience and connect with other survivors. Our hope is to provide information and support that will be helpful to you and your family.

Registration is required. To register, please mail the registration form found in the conference brochure with your choice of breakout sessions to: Saint Joseph’s Cancer Survivors’ Network, 5665 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30342. Attendance is free, however to reserve your place, a check for $10 is required. Your check will be returned at check-in on the day of the event unless you choose to donate it to further the work of the Cancer Survivors’ Network. Seating is limited to the first 250 registrants. Please register by March 14, 2008 for best availability of breakout sessions. If you would like to receive a brochure by mail, contact Sarah Penna via email spenna@sjha.org or phone (404) 851-5051 and you will be added to the Cancer Survivors’ Network mailing list.

8. May I obtain written handouts for sessions that I do not attend?

Yes. There will be a volunteer at the Cancer Survivors’ Network exhibit table who can help you request specific session handouts or other information. Those materials will be mailed to you following the conference.

9.  Will I have an opportunity to ask questions at the breakout sessions?

Yes. All of our presenters have set aside time for Q&A. We ask that questions about your specific situation be phrased in general terms so that the presenter can address your question in a way that’s helpful to everyone in the session. It is possible that all questions will not be answered due to the limited time in each session.

10. What should I do if I like two session choices in the same time period?

Unfortunately, you can only be in one place at one time. If there are written materials from a particular session that you would like copies of, we would be happy to mail those to you after the conference. There will be a volunteer at the Cancer Survivors’ Network exhibit table who can help you request specific session handouts or other information.

11. Will there be a wheelchair and oxygen available?

Yes, wheelchairs and oxygen will be available but please bring your own if you know in advance that you will need it. Please let us know if you have any special needs that may require individual assistance.

12. Do I have to stay for the entire day?

No. Of course, we prefer that conference attendees stay for the entire program, however we recognize that that may not be possible for some people. If you know in advance that you will be arriving late or leaving early, please let us know so we will have a better idea of our numbers. Please be aware that the golf cart shuttle service to the parking deck will only operate between the hours of 7:15-8:30 am and 3:3--5:15 pm.

13. When is the best time to visit the exhibit/information tables?

As in the past, there will be a variety of interesting and informative exhibit/information tables for you to visit. The best time to visit is during the registration period (7:30 am-8:30 am), during the morning break and during the lunch period (11:30 am-12:30 pm).

14. If I choose one breakout session topic now & change my mind, can I change my choice on conference day?

We prefer that you attend the session(s) that you registered for. We are careful to confirm only the number of people that a specific room can comfortably hold. Inevitably, some breakout sessions will be “full” but there will always be some topics that are “less full” where changes can be more easily accommodated. Please ask the volunteers at the registration table for a list of those sessions so you will know if a change is possible.

15. Will the presentations be videotaped?

No, unfortunately, we are not able to videotape the presentations. However, you may request the written materials from a particular session (if any) and we will mail those to you after the conference.
